Strategy in the noise
Why strategic clarity is harder than ever and what to do about it.
Most organisations don't lack information. They lack a way to decide what matters.
The pace of input has outgrown the pace of judgement. New tools, new data, new pressure; all arriving faster than the conversation that should shape them. The result is a familiar feeling: busy, but not directional.
What strategy actually does
Strategy isn't a deck. It's a small number of decisions that make a much larger number of subsequent decisions easier. When those decisions are clear, the rest of the organisation can move with confidence. When they're missing, every meeting becomes a re-litigation.
Clarity is the precondition for momentum.
Three questions worth answering this quarter
- What are we deliberately choosing not to pursue?
- Where does our advantage actually compound?
- What would we have to believe for our current plan to be right?
If the answers feel uncomfortable, that's usually a good sign. Strategy that doesn't cost anything to commit to rarely produces anything either.
